Infant Massage has numerous benefits. The first benefit to highlight most is the bond that is created between caregiver and child during massage. Cortisol (stress hormone) levels decrease and serotonin and dopamine (happy hormones) levels increase, not only for the child but for the caregiver as well!
The physical contact becomes a chemical exchange and along with all the other benefits, this special effect of massage can help both caregiver and child with depression, stress, build confidence in caring for your infant and trust with caregiver and help you both fall asleep faster, sleep deeper and sleep longer.
This is also a time to get to know your child and have them get to know you. Non-verbal communication is used by the infant and provides a wonderful insight into the child’s likes, dislikes and personality in general.
Some caregivers may be reluctant about performing massage themselves as they might feel nervous about “hurting” the child, particularly if their infant has medical concerns. Studies have shown, however, that direct skin contact with the caregivers is a main contributing factor to the wonderful physical, physiological and psychological health benefits of infant massage. “Kangaroo Care” is a global example of this phenomenon.
It is for these reasons that Sunstone Massage (Ana Kordic RMT) has combined the two modalities.
As fun as massaging infants is for pediatric massage therapists, the greatest benefits come from the caregiver massaging their child directly. In this Combination Program, your child will receive massage performed by the pediatric massage therapist and then receive massage performed by you, with instruction/guidance from the therapist. The best of both worlds in one session!
So, what does a session look like:
The entire first booking will be 45 minutes long. The first session includes a 10-15 minute Orientation/Consultation and then Massage will begin. The next 10-15 minutes the pediatric massage therapist (Ana) will massage the infant and the last 15-20 minutes will be the caregiver massaging the infant with direct guidance and instruction from the therapist.
***Health History and Consent forms are required PRIOR to any massage and/or instruction.
These forms can be downloaded below or a registration package can be picked up at both our locations.
Please provide the completed forms to the pediatric massage therapist before or at your first booking. The initial consultation will be a review of these forms and an introduction to the principles of infant massage.
